WebGL2 is necessary for viewing different Map Types and using some features in the Web Route Planner.
What is WebGL2?
WebGL stands for Web Graphics Library, and it's a piece of the puzzle that allows your web browser to display the graphics used in our map layers. The newest version of WebGL is known as WebGL2. Disabling WebGL2 is known to cause issues with certain map types displaying properly on Ride with GPS. You can test whether your browser currently supports WebGL2 by visiting this page: https://get.webgl.org/webgl2/. Inactive WebGL2 in your browser can result in graphics errors, like certain map types not displaying properly:
You may also experience an issue when using the Advanced Map Layers feature, and are prompted to switch to the RWGPS Cycle map type, even if you're currently using that map type.
Both of these are indications that WebGL2 is disabled in your browser.
Enabling WebGL2 in Your Browser
Chrome
To check that WebGL is enabled in Google Chrome, you can follow these steps:
- Open Google Chrome
- Click the three vertical dot icon in the top right corner of the browser window
- Select Settings
- Click System on the left side of the page
- Toggle the "Use graphics acceleration when available" option by clicking on it
- If the toggle appears blue, that means that graphics acceleration is enabled, and you should be good to go
- Relaunch your browser to see the changes that you made
Firefox
To check that WebGL is enabled in Mozilla Firefox, you can follow these steps:
- Type about:config in your address bar and press enter
- You may see a warning about changing configuration preferences - you'll need to click Accept the Risk and continue
- Search for webgl2
- Look for webgl.enable-webgl2 and check to ensure this preference is set as true. If it's currently set to false, click the toggle icon on the right hand side to switch it to true.
- Search for webgl.disabled and check to ensure this preference is set as false. If it's currently set to true, click the toggle icon on the right hand side to switch it to false.
- Quit and relaunch Firefox for your settings to be applied
