The beta version of the Community Point of Interest (POI) layer can be accessed by Premium users in the route planner on the web at: ridewithgps.com/routes/new
Find the Community POI layer in the route planner under the Layers menu.
Check out the Points of Interest in your area, and if you have a suggestion or feedback, use the Suggest an Edit option in the POI card to give us some additional information.
The Community POI layer helps cyclists find destinations and places to stop on rides. It provides a curated, high-quality POI dataset derived from user-generated content. These points of interest enable community contributions to keep the data accurate, comprehensive, and up-to-date.
We are using new, smaller POI icons for the POI Layer. They appear on the map and are clickable for more details:
- Name
- Location (city/region and lat/lng)
- Description
- Website link
- Photos
- Suggest an edit -- this product is in beta, and we would very much appreciate your feedback
Great Stops Make for Great Rides
Easily incorporate community points of interest to your route planning, and find the most cycling-friendly route based on your preferences. Add a custom POI to your route with any of the Route Planning Actions:
- Start Route Here: Begins a route at the selected POI (only available if the map is clear).
- Include in Route: Finds nearest point on the route to the POI, and adjusts route to include it.
- Add to Route: Extends the end of the route to the POI.
PRO TIP: Drag-and-Drop Integration
Dragging the route over a POI automatically includes it.
Adding Community POI to Routes
When you add or include a Community POI in your route, a Custom POI is created with the same data (type, name, description, and URL). You can modify the details, or location, of the custom POI as desired. (The Custom POI is a copy that is added to the route, you're not modifying the Community POI). When the route is saved, any POI added will show up when viewing the route on web and mobile, in embeds, and exported files.
NOTES:
- If nearest point on the route is somewhere in the middle, it behaves as if the user drag/dropped from that spot to include the POI.
- If nearest point is within 300 meters of the start of the route, the route start changes to the POI location, and it routes from there to the previous start of the route.
- If nearest point is within 300 meters of the end of the route, the route is simple extended to include the POI (same behavior as Add to Route).
- Undo will remove the Custom POI from the route.
Community Driven Development
The Community POI data sources was derived from public points of interest created by users over the years, and has been curated through a process that identifies the most popular and important POIs. Will be continually improved in breadth, detail, and recency through user contributions.
Are there Points of Interest you would like to see included in this layer?
Are there other types of POI that would be useful while planning your cycling routes?
Is there general feedback about the Community POI layer that you'd like to share?
