Curious about the difference between Highlights, Points of Interest, and Waypoints? Check out our help article that breaks down all three of these map elements.
Waypoints
Waypoints are designed to show important places along your route. Waypoints act as a combination of a Cue, a Point of Interest, and a Control Point. They live directly on or near your route line, appear in the elevation profile and cuesheet, and are displayed with larger icons so they’re easy to spot even when zoomed out. You can click and drag on these items and they will adjust your track line, like a Control Point. They also display in the cuesheet and along the elevation profile so you can easily identify things like snack stops, water sources, and campsites along the way.
Working with Waypoints in the Route Planner
Creating Waypoints
With one click, you can create a Waypoint from a POI or a Highlight. Simply click on the POI or Highlight, and then select one of the options outlined below:
- Include in Route will add the Waypoint to your route, and will include the Waypoint from the nearest point on your route line.
- Route to Here will add the POI as a Waypoint at the end of your route, and create a track line to the Waypoint at the end of the route.
- If you haven't yet started creating a route, you'll see the option to Start Route Here to add the Waypoint to the beginning of your route, and begin plotting a route.
Waypoints can also be created when searching for a location in the Route Planner. Create a Waypoint from the Location Search in the Route Planner by searching for a location, and then using the Include in Route, Route to Here, or Start Route Here options to add it to your route. We'll do our best to automatically match the Waypoint type based on the location entered when it's added to your route.
Adding a Custom POI anywhere along your route line will also automatically create a Waypoint.
Once you've added a Waypoint, you'll see it appear on your route line, as well as in your cuesheet and along your elevation profile.
Editing and Removing Waypoints
Click on a Waypoint from either the cuesheet or the map icon to see its summary. From there, you can select the pencil icon in the upper left hand corner to edit the Waypoint, or use the trash can icon to delete it.
Editing a Waypoint allows you to add photos, change the Waypoint's Type, and update other information about the Waypoint.
Since Waypoints also behave like a Control Point, you can also click and drag on the Waypoint to move it do a different location. Your route and cuesheet will automatically adjust to accommodate any changes made here as well.
Viewing Waypoints
On the web Route Planner and when viewing a route's summary page, Waypoints will appear on the map, the elevation profile, and in the route's cuesheet. You can click on the Waypoint from the cuesheet or map to view information about the Waypoint.
Waypoints in the Mobile App
When viewing or navigating a route in the mobile app, Waypoints will show on the map, as well as in the route's cuesheet. Tap on a Waypoint on the map to see any information and photos associated with that Waypoint.
Waypoints on GPS Devices
Waypoints are visible on many Garmin, Hammerhead, COROS, and Wahoo devices. Devices that support displaying Waypoints on the map will do so. Otherwise, Waypoints will be displayed in the cuesheet as a cue, or as a Course Point if supported.
